Bonsai Re-potting for Beginners in Auburn Douglas

For every bonsai tree, eventually comes a time when its root system has taken all the space in the pot, limiting additional development required to support the growing plant. An operation of root pruning and bonsai repotting should be performed to deal with this problem. It will reorganize the root system and allow the tree to grow vigorously and healthy for a long time. Tips in the next post will give you an overview on how best to do bonsai repotting by yourself.

First, you have to check whether it's already the time for repotting that is bonsai. This needs to be done each year during early springtime, when the tree is still in dormancy. Gently ease the tree out of its own pot and examine the rootball. If you see long roots encircling the inner side of the pot or the rootball, it is already the time for bonsai repotting to be implemented.
Prepare a new pot, where the tree will soon be put, or clean the old one. Cover the drainage holes using a plastic net, fastening it with a bit of wire. Then put a layer of grit on the underside of the pot, to permit draining, after which on top of it a layer of earth, where the tree will probably be planted.

Another part of the bonsai repotting process would be to displace the old land in the rootball, preferably using chopsticks, when the pot is ready. Prune the longest roots with a sharp pair of shears or scissors. Also look for almost any rotting, dead, wounded or infected roots, and remove them too to refrain from spreading root rot. Aim to remove up to 1/3 of general root mass.

Finally put the tree in the pot that is prepared and tie it with the wire that is anchorage, to ensure that wind won't rocks it in the forthcoming weeks, when its roots aren't yet fully regenerated. Fill the remaining portion of the pot with fresh soil, ensuring that there are no air pockets. Water the compost completely, to help it settle.

With the bonsai repotting operation entire, the tree will now need about six weeks for regeneration. After that, its root system will likely have the ability to grow freely, growing more fine feeder roots in a denser rootball, than what might be performed with unpruned roots. This can translate into more essential nutrients feeding your plant that is cherished, and in effect its improved health, vibrancy along with your enjoyment of its attractiveness.
