Bonsai Re-potting for Beginners in Hortonville
For every tree that is bonsai, eventually comes a time when its root system has taken all the space in the pot, limiting additional development needed to support the growing plant. To deal with this issue, an operation of bonsai repotting and root pruning should be carried out. It will reorganize the root system and permit the tree to grow vigorously and healthy for a long time. Hints in the next post will provide you with an overview on the best way to do bonsai repotting by yourself.
First, you should check whether it is already the time for bonsai repotting. This has to be done every year during early spring, when the tree remains in dormancy. Gently ease the tree from its pot and examine the rootball. In case you see long roots encircling the inner side of the pot or the rootball, it is already the time for bonsai repotting to be implemented.
Prepare a brand new pot, where the tree will likely be planted, or clean the old one. Cover using a plastic net, fastening it with a bit of wire. Then place a layer of grit on the underside of the pot, of ground, where the tree will be planted a layer on top of it, and then to allow draining.

Another step in the bonsai repotting procedure will be to displace the old ground in the rootball, preferably using chopsticks, when the pot is prepared. Prune the longest roots using a sharp pair of scissors or shears. Also look for any roots that are dead, decaying, wounded or infected, and remove them too to avoid distributing root rot. Aim to remove up to 1/3 of general root mass.
Finally set the tree inside the prepared pot and tie it with the wire that is anchorage, to ensure that it will not be rocked by wind in the forthcoming weeks, when its roots aren't yet completely regenerated. Fill the rest of the pot with fresh soil, ensuring there are no air pockets. Water the compost thoroughly, to help it settle.
With the bonsai repotting operation whole, the tree will now need about six weeks for regeneration. After that, its root system is likely to be able to develop growing more fine feeder roots in a denser rootball, than what could be performed with unpruned roots. This will translate into more essential nutrients feeding your plant that is cherished, and in effect its improved health, vibrancy and your enjoyment of its own beauty.
